BRIEF HISTORY
Native Americans farmed around Stone Mountain and traded
actively with the Spanish, British and French for more than 200 years, until
the State of Georgia distributed the land to white settlers on a lottery
system. Originally named "New Gibraltar", Stone Mountain village was chartered
in 1839 and established in 1845, at the foot of Stone Mountain on the newly
completed Georgia Rail Road line. As it is also today, Stone Mountain was a
popular tourist spot. It was also used as a source of granite. The new railroad
transported Stone Mountain granite throughout the world, until the Civil War,
when the Union Army destroyed the line between Stone Mountain and Decatur. As
Southerners rebuilt after the Civil war, quarrying was resumed energetically,
locals rebuilt their village, and merchants set up shop once more. Today the
village of Stone Mountain retains its picturesque charm and the surrounding
small town is made up of new subdivisions.
POPULATION
Stone Mountain's 7,200 inhabitants are predominantly
African-American or White, and the population is young and family
orientated.
