About the Stone Mountain, Georgia Area

LOCATION

The beautiful town of Stone Mountain is located at the base of one of Georgia's most popular state parks and is 15 miles east of Atlanta, on Highway 78. I-285 provides quick access to the other communities in DeKalb County.

TRANSPORTATION/AIRPORTS

MARTA runs buses to Stone Mountain from Avondale, Kensington, and downtown Atlanta. The Dekalb-Peachtree Airport is 10 miles from Stone Mountain, while the Hartsfield Atlanta International is about 21 miles.

BRIEF HISTORY

Native Americans farmed around Stone Mountain and traded actively with the Spanish, British and French for more than 200 years, until the State of Georgia distributed the land to white settlers on a lottery system. Originally named "New Gibraltar", Stone Mountain village was chartered in 1839 and established in 1845, at the foot of Stone Mountain on the newly completed Georgia Rail Road line. As it is also today, Stone Mountain was a popular tourist spot. It was also used as a source of granite. The new railroad transported Stone Mountain granite throughout the world, until the Civil War, when the Union Army destroyed the line between Stone Mountain and Decatur. As Southerners rebuilt after the Civil war, quarrying was resumed energetically, locals rebuilt their village, and merchants set up shop once more. Today the village of Stone Mountain retains its picturesque charm and the surrounding small town is made up of new subdivisions.

POPULATION

Stone Mountain's 7,200 inhabitants are predominantly African-American or White, and the population is young and family orientated.

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, Stone Mountain Village provides a link to history. The town's quaint beauty and famous park gives it a unique appeal to visitors the world over. Stone Mountain Park features the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world; the centerpiece of a nightly laser show each summer. Other attractions at the park include golf, tennis, nature trails, water sports, an antebellum mansion, museums and a riverboat. The brand new state-of-the-art Stone Mountain Tennis Center stadium is home to a number of local ALTA and USTA teams.

HEALTHCARE

A variety of MDs offer traditional healthcare; alternative and holistic therapies are also available. Excellent hospital care is close at hand, with the Emory Northlake Regional Medical Center about 5 miles away in Tucker, and both the Decatur Hospital and DeKalb Medical Center about 8 miles away in Decatur.

EDUCATION

Built in 1907, Stone Mountain Elementary has grown into a thriving school with an academic emphasis and peer mentoring and mediation programs. Students benefit from these peer relationships as they go on to Stone Mountain Middle School and Stone Mountain High. The High School provides its culturally diverse students with a challenging academic program, sporting activities, and special education.
Gables Academy serves local 10-19 year olds who have dyslexia and/or learning disabilities.

Real Estate Tips
Animal House >House Odors

What is "H.O."? You can probably guess--it means "home odors".

Be careful of odors in your home. If your family room smells stuffy and stale, or if your cat or dog has left a distinctive odor in the hallway, take action by eliminating the source of the odor rather than merely treating the effects. Smells have a powerful effect on the way people react to a house, and no amount of room freshener or vanilla on the light bulbs can mask a serious odor problem. In fact, such remedies may draw attention to the problem. We have seen homes with an odor problem languish unsold on the market for months or sell for significantly less than comparable homes in the neighborhood.

If you think that you may have a problem, talk candidly with your real estate agent. Your agent should be able to offer some constructive suggestions, and perhaps refer you to a professional who can help banish H.O. from your home!
