Atlanta
With more than 700 of the nation's Fortune 1000 companies operating in Atlanta, and a Chamber of Commerce that actively maintains a high-quality business environment and recruits new companies to the region, Atlanta leads the nation in job creation. The last decade has seen nearly 600,000 new jobs created. Tied with Fort Lauderdale as America's seventh best city for entrepreneurs, (Entrepreneur magazine, 2001) Atlanta's current labor market is at full employment, and unable to meet the growing demand. Opportunities for qualified personnel are rife, particularly in corporate headquarters, transportation, computer services, telecommunications, and most dramatically, biosciences. Over the past decade the region's biosciences sector has grown over 150%. Currently there are more than 200 biosciences companies employing more than 10,000 in metropolitan Atlanta, including the headquarters of major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies like Solvay, UCB Pharma, Merial and Serologicals. Local technology firms include Lucent Technologies. Atlanta has emerged as a banking center and is the world headquarters for 13 Fortune 500 companies.
Decatur
Sensitive downtown development has given Decatur a thriving local business scene, with an employment base of one third services and one third government. Real estate, construction and retail sales make up the majority of the remainder. Aside from government bodies and the Decatur Board of Education, major employers are the local Agnes Scott College, Decatur, Egleston, and Emory hospitals, BioLab Inc. and Simons Engineering. Decatur's progressive local government encourages citizen participation in the city's business, which has spurred the emergence of Decatur's hip retail and entertainment district.
Stone Mountain
Tourism brings much to Stone Mountain's local economy. The nearby Stone Mountain Park's 30 million dollar expansion has created more jobs for the local community, while retail and service businesses thrive in the historic village and surrounding town. The Atlanta Regional Commission and the City of Stone Mountain funded "Livable Centers Initiative Plan" draws on community input to improve the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods. Proximity to Atlanta and Decatur brings wider employment opportunities.
